Remarks With Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili: "Georgia today is a successful country, a country ... whose economy tripled since your last visit here in 2005"

Ronald D. Asmus - A War The West Must Stop - washingtonpost.com

Ronald D. Asmus - A War The West Must Stop - washingtonpost.com: "There is war in the air between Georgia and Russia.Such a war could destabilize a region critical for Western energy supplies and ruin relations between Russia and the West"...The real issue, however, is Moscow's desire to subjugate Tbilisi and thwart its aspirations to go west... Georgia, too, needs to act to de-escalate the tension. Yet Tbilisi cannot resolve this crisis alone. Halting the drift toward war requires heavy lifting by the West. In the short term, we need to prevent a conflict from starting this summer. In the medium term, we need Moscow to reverse its creeping -- and illegal -- annexation of Abkhazia. In the longer term, we need to establish an authentic peace process that can resolve the conflict for good... Accepting Moscow's demand for a sphere of influence was wrong in 1945. It would be wrong again today"

Remarks With Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili: "Secretary Condoleezza Rice"
Tbilisi, Georgia
July 10, 2008

We have noted concerns that violence should be -- should not be carried out by any party. And we, through the Friends process, will do everything that we can to help resolve those conflicts.

And as we have talked, it is extremely important that Georgia continue to develop democratic institutions. A strong parliament, strong independent media, a strong civil society and an independent judiciary will ultimately serve as the foundation for democracy in Georgia.

The violence needs to stop. And whoever is perpetrating it – and I’ve mentioned this to the President – there should not be violence. And innocent lives have been taken and it is very important that all parties reject violence as an option.

If I could just mention one other thing: The President talked about our friendship. I just – I want it to be known also – because we didn’t have a chance in the questions – we did talk again also about Georgia’s transatlantic aspirations. And the United States continues strongly to support those transatlantic aspirations and believes that the intensified dialogue that Georgia now enjoys with NATO is important, but that a membership action plan, which, after all, is not membership, but is a way to give a way for – to give a context in which countries can build greater democracy is important.

Mr. President, I hope you note that the United States stood strongly with many others and that out of Bucharest, there was, from NATO, a strong affirmation of Georgia’s transatlantic future.

The National Interest

The National Interest: "Georgia, under grave threat from Russia, must be rescued by the United States, usually through accelerated membership in NATO and American pressure on weak-kneed Europeans."

Civil.Ge | CoE Chief Concerned over S.Ossetia Tensions

: "Everyone with influence in that part of Georgia, including the governments in Tbilisi and Moscow, should do their utmost to prevent any further escalation. People in South Caucasus should not endure another war"

Civil.Ge | Senior MP Lays Out Defense Spending Priorities

: "“Probability of further escalation of tensions in the separatist regions is increasing and there is no sign yet that this probability will be reduced.”"

My comments: Despite promises Georgian government icreased defence spending in 2008. Some days ago Nika Rurua in his interview for 24Hours dayly newspapaer, 27 June 2008, stated that "if needed we will shoot not only guns but canons as well".
